The Tehri Dam on Indias Bhagirathi River, the main tributary of the Ganges, is one of the world's largest and most controversial hydroelectric projects. Under construction since 1978, the final phase of reservoir filling is scheduled to start by December 2002. Tehri is located 200 miles north east of Delhi, in the state of Uttaranchal.
